Apparition is a piece of public art which exists in both physical and digital form. Artist Steve Geliot was fascinated by the space underneath Swannery Bridge, and the way the high quality concrete structure defines and contains a stretch of water which is almost always calm and predictable, creating gentle reflections on the concrete ceiling when the sun shines low, with the voices of swans and ducks bouncing off its hard surface from time to time.
Apparition depicts a striking contrast with the wilder waters only a mile away. They are the opposite of the calm found in this location. Apparition celebrates the rowdy behaviour of water, and explores the emotions which water’s physicality transmits, like a kind of dance.
When the free app is activated, one of a number of virtual projections will appear as you hold your phone sideways in front of the bridge structure. These projections all have stereo sound, and some have spoken word. The sound is best enjoyed with headphones or earbuds.
There are several clips to choose from - just tap the numbered button you want to play.
Apparition works at Swannery Bridge, Weymouth UK.
